St. Patrick’s Day is as much about the food as it is about the Guinness, and whether you’re spending the holiday on the road or cooking for friends and family at home, these simple Irish dishes are guaranteed to be a hit.

Irish Soda Bread

This amazingly easy bread recipe can be thrown together with items you probably already have in the pantry.

What You’ll Need:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup margarine (softened)
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Mix sugar, baking soda, flour, salt, margarine and baking powder together in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Stir in the egg and 1 cup of buttermilk
  4. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough into a round.
  5. Mix the melted butter and 1/4 cup buttermilk together in a separate bowl.
  6. Move the round to the baking sheet and brush it lightly with the buttermilk mixture.
  7. Cut an “X” in the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, then brush the round again with the buttermilk mixture and let cool.
