If you’ve got your dogs along on your travels, try doing something special for them by trying these DIY projects. Not only are they a good way to pass some time, but they can add functionality and convenience to your RV.
Make a Custom Dog Station
There’s a lot of room for variety and creativity here, but the gist is this: take a board of wood and add pegs and other holders to help organize your dog’s gear.
For example, you could try taking the wooden board, sanding it down and painting it, and then adding a peg to hold your dog’s leash and adding a mason jar to hold dog treats. By hanging this on the wall next to your door, you can not only have all of your dog’s gear in one convenient place, but you can save space elsewhere as well. Other ideas to include on your dog station are a poop bag dispenser or a small basket to hold dog grooming items. Make sure to customize your station with your dog’s name!
Make Your Own Collar
By simply modifying a belt, you can make your own dog collar that will look like it came from a designer. Find an old leather belt with a pattern you like and measure around your dog’s neck with it. Trim the excess material from the belt with a pair of scissors. Taper the end into a point and you’re done! Attach a carabiner to the collar when you want to clip a leash onto it.

Older RV models often have very outdated decor features or simply a color scheme that’s not as appealing as it used to be. Upgrading your RV’s interior can be made simple by purchasing new bed coverings, rugs, throw pillows, towels and other soft goods. Reupholstering your sofa or dinette and upgrading your laminate countertops to solid surface ones are bigger upgrades that can make a huge difference in the way your RV looks and feels.
Get More Comfortable
Compacting your life inside an RV means you have to sacrifice a few of the luxuries you learned to love in your brick-and-mortar home. But many of those luxuries don’t have to be left behind. Consider swapping your RV’s dull stock shower head for one that can amplify your water pressure and even help you conserve water on the road.
RV mattresses can be less than comfortable as well, but that doesn’t mean you have to go out and spend thousands on a top-end mattress for your life on the road. Consider upgrading your mattress with a simple 2-inch memory foam mattress cover. These are often easy to clean and inexpensive, so you can purchase one for every bed in your motorhome, travel trailer or fifth wheel.

February is National Cherry Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by preparing a fresh and delicious cherry dessert in the comfort of your RV. These rich and fruity chocolate cherry cupcakes are so tasty, you may want to bake two batches.
Chocolate Cherry Cupcakes
What you’ll need for 1 dozen cupcakes:
- 3/4 cup cake flour
- 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups chopped pitted fresh cherries (plus 12 cherries for garnish)
- Cream cheese frosting
Preparation instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners.
- Whisk the cake flour, whole-wheat flour, baking soda, cocoa, baking powder and salt together in a medium bowl.
- Beat the granulated sugar and oil together in a separate large mixing bowl with an electric mixer. Beat the egg and vanilla into the mixture until combined.
- Turn the mixer to low and alternately mix in the flour mixture and buttermilk. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed until the mixture is combined.
- Fold the cherries into the mixture, then divide the batter into the cupcake pan.
- Bake the cupcakes for 22 to 26 minutes or until a toothpick can be inserted into the center and come out clean. Transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack and let them cool.
- Once cool, frost each cupcake with the cream cheese frosting. Top with a fresh cherry before serving.

Now in its fourth year, Explore Minnesota is hosting a statewide scavenger hunt called “Checkpoint Minnesota.”
The scavenger hunt is a great way to see Minnesota this winter, as the contest asks participants to check in at ten iconic Minnesota winter destinations. The ten locations are:
- Artist’s Point, Grand Marais
- Old Central School, Grand Rapids
- Mount Ski Gull, Nisswa
- Otto the Otter, Fergus Falls
- Prince Mural, Chanhassen
- Silver Lake Park, Rochester
- Alexander Ramsey Park, Redwood Falls
- Baudette Depot, Lake of the Woods
- The Shops at West End, St. Louis Park
- Walker Bay Lighthouse, Leech Lake
The more places you check in, the larger the prize you have a chance at winning (though every scavenger hunter receives a prize for participating). The ten grand prize packages (determined by raffle on February 13th), are:

While traveling, kids, though excited, are often antsy because they want to arrive at their destination now. To keep them from beating each other up and to keep your sanity, give them something to do while you are on the road. Be sure you have everything you need before you leave, including any accessories you may need to pick up at PleasureLand RV Center.
Pipe Cleaner Candy Canes
Have the kids twist red and white pipe cleaners together to make candy cane decorations. To make the craft last a while, make a game of it. Whoever sees a yellow car must yell “Yellow car!” That person can make a candy cane. Though taxis and school busses usually don’t count, for this game, you can let them count.
Cardboard Gingerbread People
Before you leave, make gingerbread people cutouts from cardboard. Cut out decorations and faces for them from construction paper. Get each child a glue stick – they are less messy than regular glue and won’t spill – and let the kids make gingerbread ornaments on the trip. When they are done, you can string them together to make a garland to decorate the RV.
Christmas Memory Game
This is a typical memory game, but you can make it more fun by providing a pattern for Christmas trees. Instruct the children to trace the pattern on green construction paper, and then cut out the trees. Glue a button on one side of each tree. Then, on the other side, put the memory clues. You can use the alphabet if your kids are just learning that. You can match a math problem with an answer. Or you can match a color word with the actual color. Adapt this game to whatever the kids are learning.
It’s probably a good idea to make the trees and put the text on them before the trip – this would be something that will get the kids excited for a trip and excited to play a new game.

Winter means a lot of things to different people. The holidays, time off, spending time with friends and family, and, to some, winter sports.
Whether you’re an old hand at the slopes or just someone who would like to give it a go for the first time, Minnesota is the destination for you. While Minnesota isn’t known for especially elevated terrain, there are numerous locations around the state that are ideal for skiing and snowboarding and there’s sure to be a slope to match your skill level.
Lutsen Mountain
Ride a red gondola up the rocky crest of Moose Mountain with the shimmering Poplar River below, then crest down a 1,000-foot drop along some of Minnesota’s biggest ski runs. As you descend, you’ll see dark evergreen forests and Lake Superior’s blue expanse in the background.
Detroit Mountain
One of Minnesota’s newest and baddest ski destinations, Detroit Mountain opened in 2014 and features a lodge and 15 ski runs. Tubing is also available there.
Giants Ridge
Overlooking Wynne and Sabin lakes, Giants Ridge straddles the rugged landscape of the Iron Range and has 35 ski runs and over 30 miles of trails for Nordic skiers.
Spirit Mountain
Lodge on the mountain and enjoy 22 runs and a terrain park nestled into the hills surrounding the St. Louis River and Lake Superior.
Coffee Mill Ski Area
In southern Minnesota you can check out Coffee Mill Ski Area, which is situated on hills rather than on mountains. Using the bluffs along the Mississippi River with 425-foot drops, the resort has 14 runs.

There’s no better place to learn about RV living than from travelers who have lived life on the road. And these must-have tips have been compiled by some of the most experienced RV travelers in the country — members of the Escapees RV Club. So next time you hit the road, keep these helpful tips on hand to help your RV travels roll along more smoothly.
RV Living Tips From the Experts
- Always keep wheel locks on hand.
- Become a member of the Escapees RV Club and embark on some RV rallies.
- Invest in a high quality sewer hose or two and have the correct connectors on hand.
- Check the condition of your tires and the tire pressure before each journey.
- Create a checklist for all of your departures.
- Know how to maintain your chassis and house batteries and check them often.
- Keep more than one fire extinguisher in your RV.
- Don’t travel with any items that have less than two uses.
- Throw your toilet paper in the trash instead of the toilet to save room in your black water tank.
- Scott’s single-ply toilet paper is less expensive and more comfortable than special RV toilet papers.
- Buy small surge protectors for every appliance in your RV.
- Turn your water heater on roughly 30 minutes before you plan to use hot water.
- Let your black water tank fill at least halfway before you empty it.
- Always keep bottled water or a water filter in your vehicle in case the campground’s water is not drinkable.
- Take your time and see the sights. There’s no need to race to the next destination.
- Volunteer at your destinations to meet new people and get involved in new communities.
- Keep a magnetic key somewhere on your rig, so you never have to worry about being locked out.
- Travel to a number of RV campgrounds before you choose to join an RV campground organization.

The RV lifestyle is full of adventure, excitement, and exploration, and while all of the outdoor activities can certainly bring your family closer together, there are also tons of indoor activities that can too. Consider some of these fun games and activities for the down time spent inside your RV, and you’ll never fear rainy days or long hours on the road again.
Hold an RV Treasure Hunt
Turn down time into fun time with a treasure hunt right inside your RV. Create a variety of clues to hide throughout your RV or even around the campsite if the weather is nice. Make it a competition with a small prize going to the winner, or have the kids follow the clues as a team and reward everyone with a prize at the end.
Create a Special Meal Together
Whether it’s a festive Mexican taco night, your very own RV pizzeria or just your family’s favorite meal — cooking a dinner together can be the perfect way to bond on a rainy day or during that down time after an adventure. If you’ve got an entire day to fill, decorate your RV with your dinner’s theme before you start cooking. And don’t forget to get your kids involved in the easier aspects of cooking (stirring, plating, etc.)
Turn Your RV Into a Movie Theater
Instead of simply turning out the lights and popping a movie into the DVD player, set your RV up as a movie theater for rainy days or those long movie nights. Make sure you have movie-theater-style popcorn and treats on hand, and if you’ll be making a day of it, stock up on a variety of movies you’ve never seen. If possible, position your RV furniture in rows in front of the television to resemble movie theater style seating.
