Tips for RVing as a Couple

Traveling the country in your RV with a partner is one of the most enjoyable things in the world… or one of the most frustrating! Depends on the day, really. While you might get along most of the time, there’s something about being in close proximity with another person for days, weeks, or even months without pause that can really leave you feeling like your buttons are being pushed.

RVs mean unrivaled intimacy due to the face that they’re both your means of travel and your living quarters all in one compact package. To prevent yourself from becoming tired of your partner, it’s important to practice certain habits to distance yourself when need be.

Headphones Are Everything

There’s nothing better at creating an immediate barrier between yourself and another person than a good pair of headphones. Whether you need to cool off or simply need some alone time, headphones provide it. Listen to some music you like, catch up on an audiobook or podcast, or watch some videos. After some “alone” time, you can rejoin your partner by simply pulling the earbuds out.

Have Your Own Interests

Sure you’re traveling together and doing pretty much everything else together, but you should definitely bring along some personal hobbies with you on the road. Just like practicing them at home, your hobbies allow you to have that stress relief that only comes from doing something you love on your own. Whether it’s calligraphy, photography, writing, scrapbooking, knitting, or whatever else, don’t leave your hobbies behind.

Keep Lines of Communication Open

No matter how annoyed you are or even angry, it’s crucial that you keep communication open with your partner. While the silent treatment might sound appealing, there’s no chance that fences will be mended if you don’t talk. On that note, don’t stay angry with your partner. You’re on the road with them with nowhere to go, so make the best of any situation and let go of any anger you’re harboring.

The Basics of Hiking with Trekking Poles

If you’re a beginning hiker that’s never used trekking poles, it may be because you’re not sure what to make of them. What advantages do they confer and are they right for your hikes? If you’re thinking about acquiring a pair and taking them out on your next hike, here’s how to make the most effective use of them.

They Help Support You

Just like a walking stick, trekking poles times the advantage by two. They’re especially useful on treacherous terrain, like loose gravel, wet rocks, or when fording shallow creeks. Not only do they help keep you upright, but they also promote good posture that in turn helps you shoulder your pack better. By putting some of your weight onto the trekking poles via your arms, you take some of the stress off of your legs and back. When you get tired later during an all day hike, you can also rely on them more and more to support you even when your knees are getting tired.

They Come in Handy in Ways You Wouldn’t Expect

Having some trekking poles on hand can be unexpectedly beneficial. They can serve as arm extensions if you need to poke something from a distance or attempt to bring something closer. Not that we recommend battling wildlife, but in a pinch they can be used to ward off an aggressive animal when escape isn’t possible.

3 Reasons RVs are Better Than Flying

Many travelers are convinced that flying is the best way to get from one destination to another. However, RV enthusiasts know that isn’t the truth. These three reasons why RV travel is better than flying will make you want to buy or rent a comfortable and convenient RV for your next travel adventure.

There Are No Deadlines

Can you imagine a vacation without flight schedules, hotel check-in times and dinner reservations? That’s what vacation is like when you travel in an RV. You no longer have to leave home at a specific time, arrive at your destination on a certain day or wait outside of busy restaurants to eat. RV vacations have no set deadlines or plans, so you can stop and go as you please, and you always have a cozy place to relax and sleep at the end of the day.

Enjoy the Journey

When you arrive at your destination in an airplane, you don’t see any of the scenery or attractions along the way. Traveling in an RV lets you make the most of your vacation, because you get to take in all of the sights on the route to your destination. Many times, the stops you make at new and interesting places become the best parts of vacation.

You’ll Save Money

RV travel is far more affordable than air travel. When you travel in an RV, you avoid costly hotel rooms, expensive restaurant meals (unless you want them) and outrageous plane ticket prices for every member of your group. renting an RV means you pay one low price plus the cost of gas along your journey. The opportunity to cook meals in your RV kitchen and park at inexpensive campgrounds means you save big bucks when traveling as a family or group.

The Top 5 Campfire Games

shutterstock_211091626

Huddling around a campfire with your friends and family is always fun, but campfire games make it even more enjoyable. These five campfire games are fun for all ages, and they don’t require any accessories, so you can play them whether you’re tent camping or at the RV park with your motorhome.

1. Name That Tune

This game is simple, and it’s even more fun if you have a musician in your group of campers. Have your musician begin playing a song or play the beginning of a song on your phone or MP3 player. The first person to guess the name of the tune wins a point, and the person with the highest number of points at the end of the game wins.

2. Telephone

Telephone is a game that always ends in a lot of laughs. Start with one person in your group and have them think of a phrase. The phrase is then whispered from one person to another around the campfire. The last person will then recite the final phrase. Hint: It is often much different than the original.

3. The No Game

The No Game is played by forbidding everyone at your campfire to say the word “no.” Campers can ask each other questions and make comments to get each other to say the word. Each person who says “no” is eliminated, and the last person standing wins.

4. Charades

Charades is a campfire game guaranteed to make you laugh. Have one person come up with a topic and attempt to act it out. The first person to guess correctly wins.

5. Pass the Ghost Story

It’s not a campfire without a ghost story. Have one player start the ghost story with one sentence then let every person in the circle add a sentence. Make it around your circle at least twice before finishing the story.

RV Tips for Beginners

P-land_July_06

Now that you’ve purchased your first RV, it’s time for the learning curve. Since this is the first time you’ll be heading out in an RV – unless you went RVing with your parents – you may want some tips to make your trip less stressful. The first time you forget something, it’s not so bad, but by the time you’re three days into a trip and find out you didn’t do something before you left – like fill the propane tanks – or you forgot something else – like the chemicals for the toilet – you’re going to blow your top.

About a week before you leave for your trip, make sure all systems are working properly. Check the plumbing, the hot water heater, the fridge, stove, heat and air conditioning unit. If you have a brand new RV you shouldn’t have any trouble with these things, but it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. If you are uncomfortable checking things yourself or if you do find a problem, bring your RV to the service center at PleasureLand RV Center.

To check the stove and possibly the heat, you’ll need propane, so this time would be a good time to ensure that both bottles are filled. Remember to turn the tanks off when you are done testing as it’s not safe to drive around with open propane tanks.

Make a list of things to pack. When you list your clothing, be sure to bring season-appropriate clothing. Don’t forget boots and rain gear. If you are camping in the winter, be sure to pack extra clothing. If you are going to be outside in the snow, you’ll want something warm to change into.

When you make your food list, it is easier to plan meals rather than to just make a list. This way, you are sure to not forget something for a specific meal. If you plan on making something complicated, use the recipe to add to your food list.

Since freezer space is limited in most RVs, buy meat as you normally do, but remove it from the store packaging. Pack it in zippered freezer bags – you’ll fit more into the freezer. Pack a cooler with ice for meat, soda and other perishables you will use during the first couple of days – you’ll have more space in the fridge and freezer. If you pack the meat in the cooler while it’s frozen, it will stay cold for a couple days. It may even be frozen on the second day.

Stop by PleasureLand RV Center for any accessories or parts you may need for your trip or to get your RV checked before you leave.
