First Aid Kit Checklist

Screen Shot 2013-05-13 at 9.59.58 AM When it comes to safe RV excursions, whether locally or for extended trips, PleasureLand’s inventory of well maintained recreational vehicles along with a selection of quality new vehicles make PleasureLand RV Center the “go-to” place for safety and comfort. While it’s important your transportation is serviced and capable of making a trip, it’s equally important to protect your family with their own first aid checklist.

Kit Preparation

You know the needs of your family, so start with vital items for those with mild allergies to insect stings or for those who have issues with pollen from flowering plants, trees and flowers. For anyone who has extreme allergic reactions to stings from bees, wasps or any other biting insect, check with your doctor before leaving so you’ll have enough medicine and needles for the duration of your vacation in case of an emergency. It’s also a good idea to have a new prescription to take along in case you need to refit the kit.

Basic Items

Band-aids are at the top of the list for blisters on heels and toes after a day of hiking or when someone cuts a finger or gets a splinter that needs removing. Bring along an assortment of band-aids in different sizes to fit most any minor situation. Waterproof band-aids are also a good idea for travelers planning water activities.

Add these items to your “must have” list:

  • Gauze pads and bandages
  • Gauze rolls
  • Adhesive tape
  • Elastic bandages for sprains
  • Clips to hold elastic bandages
  • Alcohol prep pads to clean the area
  • Cotton balls
  • Bottle of alcohol
  • Thermometer
  • Gloves and hand sanitizer
  • Tweezers to remove tiny splinters
  • Scissors
  • Splints

Along with band-aids and basic items, you’ll also need several useful medications along with a guide on how to administer first aid especially if you haven’t taken a first aid course.

  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Cold and hot packs
  • Eye wash
  • Calamine lotion
  • Poison oak and poison ivy cream
  • Iodine
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Anti diarrheal medication

Pets

Don’t forget to bring an ample supply of your pet’s prescribed medications along with the veterinarian’s name and contact information.

FYI

Keep your personal prescribed medications in a separate, water-proof bag along with over-the-counter medications so everything is in one convenient location. Also, put your doctor’s name, address and emergency contact information in this bag for each person on the trip. Make sure you refill your meds before leaving so you have more than enough in case you encounter any travel bumps along the way.

Make PleasureLand your first stop after putting together your first aid kit and schedule a tune up or service check then ride the highways knowing your family and your RV are a-okay for whatever adventures lie ahead.

RVing with Pets and Children

Having kids doesn’t mean that you have to give up the RV lifestyle, and being an RVer doesn’t mean that you can’t adopt that dog that you’ve been longing for. There are some considerations to keep in mind when you have kids and dogs on the road, but by and large, pets and children can love the open road as deeply as you do.

Screen Shot 2013-05-02 at 9.19.31 AM

Caring for Children on the Road

Children do tend to thrive on stability, having the same friends for more than a few days at a time, so you don’t find a lot of full-time RVers on the road, but it’s hard to find a child who doesn’t enjoy heading to a new campground every month, spending every summer exploring lakes, rivers and roadside attractions.

Scheduling a few big trips a year with a few weekends out here and there is generally going to be your best bet at providing both stability and adventure in your child’s life. Summer, Winter and Spring break are all a great opportunity to spend a week in the mountains or traversing Old Route 66.

Caring for Pets on the Road

It might not be a bad idea to look for a smaller pet. Even if you have a large RV, it’s tough on a big dog to always be cooped up inside of the vehicle. As much as they’ll love exploring hiking trails with you, the time spent in between stops can be very stressful for a larger animal.

If your pet has special dietary concerns, then make sure to stock up before you take off for a trip. Don’t assume that every small town in the country has what you need to feed your four legged friend.

The open road calls to us all at some point or other, whether you’re an adult, a child, a dog or a cat. The freedom and thrill of waking up in a new town every morning, of exploring your home country has universal appeal. As long as your pet or child has all of their needs taken care of, then there’s no reason not to take them out on the road with you.

Minnesota’s Character Challenge Course for RVers Thirsty for Adventure

Minnesota RV ers spend a lot of time with sitting behind the wheel driving. We love the outdoors, but the opportunities for real, tough, physically taxing challenges are few and far between. Staying in shape is important when you’re on the road, and really pushing yourself to the limit can be incredibly rewarding, which is why, if you find yourself in Minnesota, you may want to check out the Character Challenge Course.

What it is

The Character Challenge Course is what you’re probably thinking: a tough outdoor challenge that will push you to the limit and see what you’re really made of. The challenges here are popular team building exercises for families, co-workers and friends just looking for a great way to spend the weekend.

The Challenges

The challenges here aren’t just physical in nature, they also demand real cooperation between the members of your traveling party. Whether that’s just you and your spouse, a group of traveling roomies or a whole family, you’ll be challenged with elevated trust falls, rope swinging, and a wide assortment of outdoor games that are both physically and personally demanding.

The Zipline Finish

The coolest part of the whole C4 challenge course is the zipline finish. The 370 foot zipline finish has you sliding into home, so to speak, providing a great climax to the whole affair. If you’ve never ziplined before, this is the way to do it, soaring through the trees of the Minnesotan wilderness.

If you want to go on a real adventure while you’re traveling through Minnesota, the Character Challenge Course may be just the way to do it. If you sign up in advance, it really doesn’t matter if you’re bringing the whole office or just you and a few friends. Gather your regular traveling buddies or show up with your family and enjoy a challenge course that pushes you to your limits and rewards you with a new understanding of yourself and the people you go through the course with.

Minnesota Spring Break Destinations for RVers

Minnesota is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful states in the union, and one of the very best to cruise through in your RV, especially in Spring. Watching the flowers bloom and animals frollicking by the roadside as you roam from town to town, it’s really what being an RVer is all about. Here are a few of the best locations to hit up in Minnesota on your Spring Break vacation:

Beaver Trails at the Jellystone Park Camp-Resort

If you like to mix your outdoors explorations with a little bit of good old fashioned R’n’R and maybe even a little pampering, this camp/resort in Jellystone Park offers you everything that you could possibly want whether you’re after rugged or relaxing. With 225 full hook-ups, you can probably bet that there’ll be a spot open for you when you arrive, and the five star resort boasts an arcade, shuffleboard and boat rentals. A great place to get away from it all this Spring Break.

Stony Point Resort

Stony Point Resort rates five stars from Woodall’s, thanks to its great fishing spots, swimming opportunities, boat rentals, grills, and a small shop with some groceries in case you don’t want to make the trip to town for some supplies. Stony Point Resort is great any time of year, but especially in the Spring.

Dakotah Meadows Park

With 122 pull-through sites and full hook ups including Wifi and electric, this incredible spot actually has a rock climbing wall, a family fun area, a fitness center and a swimming pool. It’s almost a luxury apartment building for RVers, so it’s no wonder it regularly scores four and five star reviews from a wide range of RV park review websites. If you love the outdoors as much as you love your creature comforts, Dakotah Meadows mixes the two so that you never have to compromise. The only problem with staying here for Spring Break is that you might not want to leave.

Spring is really just about the best time of year to be an RVer, and these three camp sites prove it.

A Minnesota RV Thanksgiving

The perfect Thanksgiving includes family, a roaring fire, and a yummy feast – preferably at your favorite Minnesota RV campsite, of course!

You bring the family. And for the “feast” part, we’ve found a terrific recipe that should work well when your Thanksgiving gathering happens in the great outdoors. It’s “Thanksgiving in a Dutch Oven,” and this comes to us courtesy of our friends at Kampgrounds of America. This recipe can be the centerpiece of your RV-style Thanksgiving. Or, it’s a great way to use those turkey leftovers in a whole new way.

Thanksgiving in a Dutch oven:

3 pound(s) sliced turkey, shredded

2 cans cut green beans, drained

1 can whole baby carrots

3 large jars turkey gravy

3 boxes cornbread stuffing

1/4 c butter

  • Butter the bottom and sides of the Dutch oven. Pour green beans in first. Add carrots on top. Layer the shredded turkey on top of carrots and green beans. Pour gravy over the two layers. Mix cornbread stuffing according to package directions and add on top of the ingredients and press down to cover the layers in Dutch oven. Cut any remaining butter into pats and place on top of stuffing mix.
  • Place over hot coals and shovel some coals on top of the Dutch oven. Allow to cook for 20 – 30 minutes until hot and bubbly and the stuffing has browned on top.
  • Serve with rolls and pumpkin pie for a tasty meal.

We think almost any holiday is better in one of Minnesota’s state parks. To find a park, reserve your RV campsite, and learn more about the activities, visit the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Some of our favorite holiday activities will be finding ways to get rid of all those calories we packed on during that Thanksgiving feast. The Winter Activities Guide offers some great ideas for fun in the snow, from sledding to snowshoeing.

No matter where you spend it, we wish you and your family a fabulous Thanksgiving!
